I have a blog running on Movable Type that does not publish unless I set the setuid bit for all CGI scripts (perms are 755). My overall understanding of setuid is pretty rudimentary, but from what I've gathered, it could potentially make a system less secure. So, in the case of an MT install, is setting the setuid bit for all CGI scripts bad form?

I'm trying to understand why my Movable Type install (hosted on NearlyFreeSpeech.NET) won't function properly without including the setuid attribute.
Every time I upgrade, I always have to chmod -R u+s * or else I see the following dashboard error:
Movable Type was unable to write to its support directory.
It's a problem that 775 and 777 perms don't solve and it keeps me from publishing (nonsense on my blog, so maybe it's a good thing).
I've got a basic understanding of setuid, but I was wondering if someone could please explain why/whether it's necessary in my case and if I need to find a better solution. My gut feeling is that setting this flag is a potential security issue.
